May 13, 2022 Lobo Canyon Trails Groundbreaking Ceremony

WOW It was so awesome to see so many GREAT community members of Cibola County out last night at our ground breaking ceremony. We hope to see you all on the trail this summer when we can. Currently we are under Stage 2, fire restrictions and could move soon into a closure, that is TBD but let's not, let that stop us in the meantime. We will plan as we can to work every Thursday Evening from 5pm to 7pm and Saturday June 4, 2022, currently meeting location will be Coal Mine Campground. The fees will be waived for those working but also have to make sure we let the paying customers park in the campground. Might be wise to car pool as the campground opens this summer.

All our communication will be via our Events page on our website and then FB next. I will try to also send out emails to keep you in the loop.

Appreciate you all.

2022 Exciting Things to Come

In Case some of you were wondering, we are still an active organization; it just has been a busy but quiet start to the year with the potential of exciting things being launched in 2022 for our community.

As many members know we have been trying to launch and build Lobo Canyon Trails previously known as Grants Ridge Trail.  The process has been very lengthy and insightful though we are moving in a great direction to be able to have single track multiuse non-motorized trails within minutes of downtown Grants.  The signed decision is an ink pen away from being a reality for us all.  Yup, I know we have been told this several times already, but we are amongst the final signatures to be able to have our very own single track multiuse non-motorized trails.

What’s NEXT:  Lobo Canyon Trails is Approximately 22 miles, and it must be implemented.  How is it going to be implemented, you ask, remember all that fundraising and donations that CTA participated in, before 2020, we have bought many hand tools because of those donations so that we would be able to build and maintain trails in our community.  Also, our USFS donated a small tool cache this past year as well (Thanks).  That is right our community (YOU) will be asked to volunteer your time and sweet as equity to implement the trail system, in partial.  Your equity then can be used for a match in the States Trails + grant and several other small grant opportunities to potentially hire several trails crews (Ancestral Land’s Trail Crew or YCC) we see fit to implement the rest of the trail.  SO, we will need your help soon to make this dream a reality for our community.  We will be sending out emails of trail workdays and look to publish a calendar of those days for you to be able to plan a day to join us on the mountain.  See our website for the trials map.

Quartz Hill update:  The trail system is stalled on implementation, I don’t know who is to blame and it does not matter, what matters is that there is potential for some great recreating within this system so when you get the chance reach out to your local county representative and ask them to ensure this trail system moves forward.  This will be a great weekend camping trip for our bike tourists that visit Grants.

CDT We are still responsible for the sections of the CDT, and we need to get out soon to open up any deadfall, so we have through hikers staying on the trail this year.  The past year we have had great support from individual people maintaining portions of the trail.  The USFS has also made some small reroutes on the trail going up the mesa which have been appreciated by many.  I hear in the next few years the CDT should be completely off portions of the road on Mt Taylor and that will be great.

Events: No Quartz Hill Mountain bike race until trails are implemented in the area.

The Milan Triathlon will be a GO this year.

All other fundraising events will depend on the resources we have to make it happen with what projects we have going on
